Prologue – Alex

Alex slid down on his chair. His boss stood before him, arms folded, not making eye contact. The general mood of the place tugged itself down, down, and Alex didn’t see it lifting.

“I’m sorry, Alex.” Ruthar continued looking anywhere but at Alex. “She’s gone.”

“I said—!” Alex slammed his fist on the desk, and Ruthar didn’t flinch, just slumped his shoulders. “I said she shouldn’t be going on any more missions! I said she needed time out, to see a psychologist or something, that she was taking on more and more dangerous missions…”

“You know as well as I did there was no stopping that woman. When she wanted in on a mission, she’d be on it. Nothing you can do there.”

Alex bumped both his fists together, trying to ignore the spike of pain in his heart, the memories of Kelly, of the things they did together, and knowing she now lay cold in a morgue, waiting for her coffin, for her family to come and pay their respects to her. “Yeah, I know,” he said, some of the rage exhaling out of him. He did know. Kelly hated being left out of the missions. She loved danger; she ran headfirst into it.

Trouble was, it made her seem like she had a death wish.

Perhaps she did. “Will you go to her funeral?” Ruthar asked, adjusting his black tie, making his hands busy.

“Yeah. Half the agents are going anyway. It’d be strange if I didn’t.”

Why did you have to die? Alex wanted to scream that out loud, approach Kelly’s body and shake it until it came back to life. Except she’d never be opening her eyes again. She’d done her last mission.

“You need to stop with this,” he’d told her. “It seems every time there’s risk now, you’re taking it.”

“I like it. I need it. I’d die on the job if I could.”

Well, she’d gotten her wish alright. Just a shame she never considered Alex’s wishes in all this. Maybe he wanted the person he loved to want to live.

Maybe he wanted them to listen to him for once.

“I know you cared for her,” Ruthar said. “Everyone knew it.”

Alex let out a snort, but said nothing else. His boss remained silent for a respectful moment, leaving him to brood, to dwell on everything Kelly, and to deal with the reality she’d no longer be around.

“I actually… have a mission for you. If you’re interested. Unless you need to be signed off from work for a bit.”

He clung to the thought of distraction, of something to get him out of this misery. “Sure. I’ll do it. What is it?”

“A potential necromancer. Doesn’t know about her powers yet, seems to be part of a cult. You’d be helping a police team to deal with the case. Your task is to secure her and the artifact associated with the cult this necromancer is in, and to bring her in. We need more.”

Yeah, they did.
